UN Agencies Pledge to Fight Africa’s Food Insecurity Issues

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and three Rome-based UN agencies have reiterated their commitment to strengthening collaboration in fighting food insecurity in Africa.

The executive secretary of ECA, Vera Songwe, on Monday met with the principals of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Food Program (WFP), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

The four leaders agreed to strengthen their relationship to effectively deal with food security issues on the continent, with more focus on areas like statistics, policy development and land.

The ECA executive secretary said her commission is keen to deepen collaboration with the three organizations.

“Under one roof we have combined knowledge on climate change, food security, and conflict. These issues… must be tackled in a comprehensive way,” she said.
