Sierra Leone News: World Tree Planting Day – fighting climate change

At the Prince Of Wales School on the 3 August 2017, a ceremony was performed in observance of the World Tree Planting Day.

Chaired by Alex Bangura who is the Executive Director of Campaign For Equality stated that no nation, whether rich or poor, is immune from the effects of climate change. Tree planting increases water levels in our rivers, wells, streams, rivers and oceans. Land is a natural gift and must be maintained by preserving our forests and green cover.

The Director, Shout Climate Change Africa, Doris Neneh Massaquoi, observed that Sierra Leone is still yet to cope with the effects of climate change. There is the need therefore to embark on systematic reforestation and planting a tree(s) is a useful and rewarding way of exercising that. Sierra Leone is a signatory to international treaties on climate change issues.

The representative from the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security revealed that Sierra Leone is the second most vulnerable country in the world when it comes to climate change issues and that the western area has been greatly deforested. He therefore urged the sustainable use of the forest and that cutting down trees proliferates the spread of carbon dioxide.
