East African Farmers to Receive Help from CAADP
Farmers in the East African Community (EAC) have something to look forward to with the announcement of the signing of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Compact soon.
Speaking at the Eastern and Southern African Small Scale Farmers Forum (ESAFF) meeting on the evaluation of the INVOLVE project, the EAC Senior Livestock and Fisheries officer Agriculture and Food Security Department, Dr Timothy Wesonga said the compact will progressively contribute towards hunger and poverty reduction.
“The CAADP Compact will serve as a shared framework for strategic planning and implementation and for partnership and development assistance in the agricultural sector as well as promote and contribute the EAC integration process by consolidating the EAC Common Market provisions,” he explained.
He said that the Malabo Declaration is an important and relevant framework in Africa and that its seven goals were geared towards improving people’s wellbeing through agriculture, increased productivities, increased public and private funding to the sector to a level of 10 per cent annually, ensuring access to market and enhancing resilience for vulnerable groups against natural disaster mainly brought by climate change.
