South Africa: Scientists Note Impact Of Climate Change On Buzzards Bay
Buzzards Bay is experiencing effects of climate change, according to a study published in the journal Biogeosciences this month.
Data from the past 22 years show that summertime water temperature in Buzzards Bay has increased by 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit while algal growth, measured by chlorophyll concentrations, has increased by 4 percent per year, roughly doubling over the 22 years.
“There has been consistent increase in summertime temperatures with almost the same rate of chlorophyll concentrations indicating that poor water quality has increased as well,” said lead author Jennie Rheuban, a research associate at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
